The
SANSOR Legal Standing Committee consisted of the SANSOR legal
advisor Dr Chris Pretorius and Mr Mike Zingel. The Promotion
of Information Act was brought into effect during the period
under review. The deadline for conforming to the act had,
however, been extended as most of the nation seemed to have been
unprepared. Details and sources of further information were
circulated to members during February 2003.
Matters that had been identified by the committee in previous
years received much attention from the organisation as a whole,
notably the Equity Act and legal instruments on the protection
of intellectual property.
Regarding the Equity Act, the unit standards that were
generated and arranged into proposed qualifications under the
auspices of the Sector Education & Training Authority for
Secondary Agriculture (SETASA), had yet to be accepted by the
relevant authorities. The delays were disappointing.
Concerns with regard to the protection of intellectual
property were being addressed by the arrangement with Agri
Inspec.
The various laws that concerned our members in particular had
either a SANSOR representative from the Secretariat or a
volunteer from the Industry appointed to take care of routine
interests. A number of these laws were due to be revised. It
would be necessary for the legal committee to become involved in
the process.
